When a person chooses a career path, he puts in the necessary time, resources and training to get to a place of mastery, because no employer wants substandard work. In the spiritual context, the Apostle Paul tells, his protégé, Timothy, “study to show yourself approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who handles the word of truth. 2 Tim. 2:15

When we come to Christ, we begin an exciting journey of learning who Christ is and what He desires us to do. The Bible is our source material from which we glean the Word of God; we bring ourselves to consistent prayer and times of fasting; we engage the help of the Holy Spirit as we acknowledge our need and deficiency in understanding the Word and request His help in interpreting and applying the Word to our lives.

All of this takes time and discipline. Spiritual discipline is a life long experience. Many people become distracted and sometimes shipwrecked because they try to do spiritual work as singular entities. Their mistrust of others, cause them to disengage from others who could help to train and mould them into active Christian service.
