THE PLUMB LINE

A plumb line is a string with a weight at the bottom, used by builders to make sure walls are vertically straight. If a wall is not built according to a plumb line, one could suffer great loss. A leaning wall would eventually give way to the pull of gravity and fall down. Consider the following scriptures:-
"For who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. They are the eyes of the Lord which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth." Zech. 4:10 and "Thus he showed me: "Behold the Lord stood on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand." Amos 7:7.
When a workman lays down concrete or puts up a fence, he stretches out a line to make sure that his work meets the measurement for the particular project. God does this as well to our lives. Are we taking the grace of God for naught? Are we able to apply the plumb line to ourselves? We have come to know that people in judging themselves can be sincerely wrong. Only the Bible offers an accurate approach to gauge one's spiritual life by the plumb line. It is only by this that we can rightly align our lives.
God said to Jeremiah, 28:17 "I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line." Someone siad that the plumb line is not a pendulum. The pendulum can swing from right to left, which can create inaccuracies. The plumb line is the Biblical view, not yours and not mine. Even though something may appear to be perfectly upright to the naked eye, the plumb line is there to make the truth evident. It is the perfect and unmistakable standard. When God lays down the plumb line, who can contest it? Think hard about it and ask yourself as I do the same -- when the plumb line is laid to my life, what will be the outcome? Oh God, I cry out for mercy!
